Who the flock are we?

The Serama chicken, a tiny proud bird that started this wild and crazy ride called The Raptor Roost. In the winter of 2019 my fiance asked if we could get chickens. I, trying to be the sensible mind of the equation, explained that it just wasn't the right time as we needed a coop, feed and fencing among other things. I promised that one day we’d have space for all her chicken dreams! Well, wouldn't you know it, chicken math had struck for the first time in our lives. The following Friday I was tasked with collecting used fiber optic cable spools from work to bring her dream to life. March 30, 2020 we had our very first chickens, The end of April we began construction on our recycled coop and Shantels journey as a business owner began.

That spring the world changed for millions of people around the world. Many began to question their continuing dependence on large corporations to deliver them the basic necessities of life. Talk of conspiracy theories and secret government cover ups filled the headlines as we were all forced and encouraged to retreat into our homes. Many families began turning to hobbies and technology to fill their time.

Shantel saw an opportunity to provide our family with an option and alternative to the dwindling grocery shelves. Though our flock had just begun, we knew this was how we could help. By educating ourselves and involving our children, a renewed passion for working towards a more self-sufficient way of life filled our home. Since the pandemic began we have focused on fostering relationships within our community and built a business solidified in a foundation of trust, respect, and love for what we do.

We choose the Serama and other Batam breeds in our flock for their small size and friendly personalities, because who wants to be chased by a big ole' angry rooster!? This also made them perfect for our backyard flock, as we did not have the available space larger fowl would require. Now my partner will be the first to tell you that I was absolutely dead set against having a rooster. As you've guessed she won that battle. The fact is, small cocks make for a quiet crow, giving them another notch in the win column. And how was I supposed to tell her no when Shinx was already standing in the yard?

Fast forward 2 years and The Raptor Roost is officially here and moving to showcase the Serama chicken as not just another farm animal.
