Brief History of Seramas
This is the Serama, a small but proud bird who has won our hearts and allowed us the opportunity to be here today. Originally named by Wee Yean Een from the Malaysian province of Kelantan, the Ayam Serama has gained a large following across the globe. With others describing them as being a brave warrior, and known as the archangel chicken, it is easy to see why cultures around the world have flocked to this little bird. With its popularity in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore growing rapidly, the bird was imported in 2001 by a select few in the United States.
By 2004 the first American Serama show was held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 2008 the Serama Club of Great Britain was fully recognized as an official affiliate of the Poultry Club of Great Britain and in 2011 the breed was admitted into the American Poultry Association (APA).
With two major Avian Influenza outbreaks, 2004 and again in 2015, the Serama breed was dealt a decimating blow to its population due to mandated culling in an attempt to slow the disease's spread around the globe. Today many breeders have welcomed these magnificent creatures into their backyard flocks. While there are breeders attempting to keep the breed true to its Malaysian heritage many owners are unaware they are being sold cross breeds.
A small, quiet, docile bird is in high demand for companionship and backyard HOA compliant flocks. We are here to provide prospective owners with the knowledge and peace of mind that they will be getting exactly what they want.
